How Might We Statement

Enhance Food Management and Community Support

How might we make it easier for users to track and manage their perishable food items before they expire, and seamlessly connect them with donation options to reduce household food waste and support the community?

The Goal

Bridging the gap between surplus food and community needs through smart fridge food management, seamless donations, and sustained support, uniquely tailored to household and community

A family

Our family usually buy more than we need which eventually leads to food being thrown away.

Shrey’s mother

I want to find a way where I don’t need to throw away nearly expired food or perished food.

College students

I just forgot that I have those food items in the fridge until I need to use it and realized it already outdated

Each team member presented a list of ideas for voting.

One common thread among our ideas was the promotion of food sustainability, including educating people about recycling and donating unused items. This theme also extended to educating individuals about composting.

Eventually, we collectively converged on a single idea: a food tracking and donation app.

Brainstorming

Current system

Individuals often lack awareness of food expiration, leading to waste. Traditional methods of food donation are sporadic and not user-friendly, making it challenging for people to contribute regularly to their community.

Remeal is a mobile app that simplifies tracking food inventory with expiration monitoring to prevent waste. It also streamlines food donations with a user-friendly interface, enabling consistent community support and sustainable living.

Reflection

What I learned

Throughout this project, I put in a lot of effort and gained valuable insights, particularly in collaborating and leading the design team to come up with sustainably designed solutions that could make an impact on the community.

Food waste: The significance of food waste resonates as a global concern, illustrating that even seemingly minor instances of excessive food waste can detrimentally impact the world by contributing to pollution.

Virtual teamwork: Demonstrating how effective communication, task delegation, and leveraging digital tools are pivotal for project success, particularly when collaborating across diverse locations and time zones.
